How to Drive Meaningful Change - Handling objections to your proposal

Summary: Be prepared to handle the various responses you will receive when you propose a change.

^ADJ: I thought this was good:

If we use a categorization model, you can expect 3 different kinds of responses when you propose something:

  1. A disagreement on outcome. There is a fundamental disagreement between you and the other person on the end desire or goal that you want to achieve.
  2. A disagreement on mechanism. While your goal may be shared by the other person, there is disagreement on the proposed solution to reach that goal.
  3. An agreement and alignment. There is both agreement on outcome as well as the mechanism to achieve that outcome.

When Writing for Busy Readers, Less Is More

TThe average person receives dozens or even hundreds of messages—emails, text messages, and so on—each day, and the average professional spends nearly one-third of their workweek reading and responding to emails. Those numbers don’t even account for all the other communications that professionals receive outside the workplace. For busy readers, handling this torrent of information and messages is like living in an endless game of Whac-A-Mole. Highly relevant updates about health and school can inadvertently get overlooked or whacked with the delete button.

^ADJ: Key message: Readers often interpret the length of a message as an indication of how difficult and time-consuming it will be to respond to.

Mouthwash impacts the effects of exercise

Now you know: Scientists have long known that the blood pressure drops after exercise but the mechanism has not been fully elucidated. A new study shows that bacteria in the mouth, which produce nitrite, is key to the whole process. The use of mouthwash to reduce the number of these bacteria prevents the expected benefit of exercise on the blood pressure.
