Enabling High-Velocity Teams
In fast-paced environments, organizations must operate with speed and velocity to stay competitive. Rapid advancements in technology demand quick adaptation, agile decision-making, and swift responses to changing expectations.
^ADJ: We often forget about what it takes to have teams perform beyond expectations, some key points that I observe:
- Clearly define and communicate the purpose of the team
- Focused Team Structure - adding more people does not help
- Minimize Multitasking - particularly important freeing up people from the "day job" if its is critical importance to team
- Actively Manage Dependencies and Distractions - C level sponsorship to deal with the politics critical
Why Data Breaches Spiked in 2023
In spite of recent efforts to beef up cybersecurity, data breaches — in which hackers steal personal data — continue to increase year-on-year: there was a 20% increase in data breaches from 2022 to 2023.
There are three primary reasons behind this increased theft of personal data: (1) cloud misconfiguration, (2) new types of ransomware attacks, and (3) increased exploitation of vendor systems. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the impact of each of these factors.
^ADJ: What I see is a little different, as to the causes:
- over confidence in the ability to manage what is complicated
- a failure to commuicate between the technically minded and management
- inability to manage risk
One way to resolve is to have a full-on Penetration Test of your systems to understand your baseline (I knwo a company that can help out).
Surveilling Employees Erodes Trust — and Puts Managers in a Bind
There’s a growing movement to track employee productivity through increasingly sophisticated technology, such as desktop surveillance, biometric smart badges, location tracking, or desk heat sensors. While this can be intrusive, it also presents opportunities for gaining profound insights into employee behavior, such as which applications employees use most frequently or whether employees are at risk of overworking based on their work patterns and productivity.
^ADJ: I dont agree with employee tracking, such as desktop survelliance. Aggregation of data to understand trends of desk, office and car park trends as an example, makes sense. What organisations do need is to understand at an aggregate level what tools and systems employees are using, so they can under the amount of "shadow IT" and risk the organisation faces.
A Cycle of Misery: The Business of Building Commercial Aircraft
"You can't win, you can't break even, and you can't quit" – Jean Pierson, former CEO of Airbus
Boeing is once again in the news following an incident on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, where an emergency exit door plug fell off mid-flight due to missing or improperly installed bolts. The aircraft, a 737-MAX9, is from the same 737 MAX family that suffered two fatal crashes in late 2018 and 2019.
^ADJ: A good reminder that no matter what your strategic issues are, spare a thought for Airbus and Boeing when they come to major decisions on going ahead with a new aircraft model.
Is Hybrid Work the Best of Both Worlds? Evidence from a Field Experiment
This paper reports causal evidence on how the extent of hybrid work—the number of days worked from home relative to days worked from office—affects employee attitudes and performance. Workers who spent around two days in the office each week on average self-reported greater work-life balance, more job satisfaction, and lower isolation from colleagues compared to workers who spent more or fewer days in the office. Employees in the intermediate hybrid condition received no different performance ratings compared to peers who spent more or fewer days in the office.
^ADJ: More evidence that Hybrid and Flexible working environments work, when you have a strategy that supports it!
